Academy’s Apology is Too Little Too Late, Says National Hispanic Media Coalition

On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued an apology for a racially offensive skit at this years Oscars, and the National Hispanic Media Coalition released the following statement from president and CEO Alex Nogales:

“One would think that the Academy would have stepped lightly on incendiary racial humor given the firestorm of #OscarsSoWhite backlash that permeated public dialogue leading up to the Oscars. Instead, there were a number of cheap shots aimed at Asian Americans, Jada Pinkett Smith was mocked for boycotting the ceremony, and Latinos and Native Americans were left out of the conversation altogether. The Academy’s apology is too little, too late.”

The National Hispanic Media Coalition is a member of the Multi-Ethnic Media Coalition, a group that recently announced a new initiative to meet with the top 6 motion picture studios – Sony, Warner Bros., Fox, Universal, Paramount and Disney—to hold the film industry accountable to communities of color.
